The Gallery 4 is pleased to welcome Hannah Grace Clark. Painter Hannah Grace Clark was born in Texas in the spring of 1989. On account of a steady stream of fairy tales from her mother, her fathers ever-present books on Jungian Psychology, and inspired by the southern flora and fauna of her hometown, she developed an interest in painting and creating her own mythology from an early age. Clark earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Tulane University in 2011. During her time in New Orleans, and after her studies, she worked as an elementary art teacher and in early childhood education, specializing in creating imaginative learning experiences for children. In the fall of 2011 she settled in Pittsburgh along with her husband and two sons, where she currently works from her home studio. In 2010 she was selected to display work in the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and has participated in many juried shows across the country. Most recently, Clark has exhibited at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, RAW Artists Pittsburgh, and showcased her work as an Emerging Artist with the Three River’s Art Festival. The Gallery 4 was first introduced to the works of Clark via our annual group Salon Show exhibition in 2013, and we're so glad to've made her acquaintance.

Hannah's current subjects and motif reflect the creation of a complex inner world: fantastic beasts and the dreamlike environments in which they dwell. The creatures and beings that inhabit her paintings embody human traits: both the divine and lucid aspects of ourselves as well as the shadowy, confused parts we often try to hide. Clark employs a powerful imagination as well as a masterful understanding of character form, subtleties in natural lighting, an exquisite palette of colors, and an accomplished oil painting technique - to convey the lively, complicated story. The personal narrative is enacted quickly - the pieces, transcendent. With ease, Clark instantly delivers the viewer to another place - though familiar, inviting; we are reconnected with a part of the spirit which engages with the world in a childlike manner: playful, awe-inspired, and enchanted by life.

These interior lands and the entities that inhabit them, embody "Ancient Gods and Hidden Worlds". Featured in this a series of oil paintings on wood panel, Clark explore themes of hope, courage, and harmony. In these allegorical compositions, you will find tranquil, ethereal landscapes which house a variety of gentle beasts: Fantastical beings, and oversized bears tend to gardens of mountains and collect moons in mason jars. A journey of continually perceiving wonder and learning anew through the inside world to the outside world. Sweet dreams!

Hannah, on the works -

"This body of work was made over the last year of my life. Every night for the past year, after I tuck my children in to bed, I walk up the stairs to my attic studio and sit down to paint. Here in this quiet space, alone with my thoughts, and half asleep, inspirations and memories from the day escape my head and swim about the room - Days with my children spent finding bugs, discovering secret places, buried treasure, and enchanted rocks, talking to stuffed animals with secret lives and reading countless children’s stories marinade with my own frustrations, worries, guilt, love, joy and and all the things I feel which I can’ t quite articulate with words. In these paintings I explore my thoughts and feelings about parenting, responsibility, and the excruciating desire to explore my own truth and passion in life."
